This week at Art&Co we were lucky enough to have amazing professional artist Lyn Hammond come into the studio to teach our students how to paint Clouds. There is nothing like nature to inspire artists – both young and old, and the results were fantastic. Here are some of Lyn top tips for painting clouds in acrylic:
1. Paint your background first – this helps later on when the blue of the sky comes through, creating shadows in your clouds
2. Create natural shaped clouds – using a dry brush to ‘fluff’ out the edges. Always avoid cartoon-like hard edges, they look unnatural
3. Layer up your white in a natural, uneven way to create light and dark areas on the cloud
4. Mix a warm white to highlight parts of the cloud where the sun touches the clouds, and a cool blue/grey to low light where the cloud is in shadow
Just a few of the tips the children put to use all last week – with the finished products looking fantastic. We can’t wait to see how they use this new technique in future Landscapes!
